Announced today, Z02 frontman and singer/songwriter Paulie Z will take the frontman/vocalist position for the band Sweet as they embark on their 50th Anniversary Tour throughout 2018.
Rising to fame in the 1970’s, the band would ultimately score a legion of fans with the song “Fox On The Run,” singing about the female fans that would stalk the band. It was the first single the band would write themselves, as former hit songs by the band were produced or co-produced by hitmakers Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman. Ultimately, the song would appear on the band’s third album “Desolation Boulevard” via Capitol Records, and would land them on Billboard‘s Top 100 Singles at Number 5. A legacy was born.
For the careers of throngs of “glam-rock” artists, many claim influence to drive them forward was inspired by Sweet. The band’s up front rock style, tongue in cheek lyrics and hook laden tracks did more than lead a generation, it molded a style of music that would span across the next decade, and become the staple that created the MTV generation.
Throughout the band’s history, and since their untimely break-up in the late 70’s, different versions of the band, featuring original members, have both performed and recorded under the name Sweet. One featured in the UK offers fans guitarist Andy Scott and in the US, bassist Steve Priest performs regularly in Los Angeles and across the states with a team of musicians that has changed with the solo careers of each member.
Fans will remember the line “Are you ready Steve?” in the hit single “Ballroom Blitz,” making reference to Priest on bass in the song. Priest, a die-hard member that continues to carry on the band’s legacy, has performed the music of Sweet with legendary rock artists including in his band today – guitarist Mitch Perry (Lita Ford, Edgar Winter), and vocalists Chas West (Jason Bonham Band) and Joe Retta (Heaven and Earth), who have both continued on with their careers in other bands.
Today, announcing the start of their 50th anniversary tour in 2018, Sweet has shared news that singer/songwriter Paulie Z will front the band going in to the new year. Z has been the frontman of his family formed band Z02, and starred in 20 episodes the original American comedy TV series Z-Rock. Recently, Z has been seen hosting and performing in the weekly “Ultimate Jam Night” showcase held at the world famous Whisky – A – Go Go, has released his own solo CD, formed a charity for music education and has even created a digital guitar instruction series on the Internet for people taking up the guitar.
The band will launch the tour with a show at the Whisky on Sunset in Hollywood on December 22nd, with select dates currently booked and more to come. View the band’s tour schedule here: https://thesweetband.com/tour-dates/
